What is an AI context layer?

Definition

An AI context layer is a shared, governed record of an organisation's decisions, commitments and knowledge that any AI tool or agent can read. It sits between a company's work and its AI tools, so every model answers from the same current business context instead of a blank slate or a hand-written prompt.

Also called: context layer, AI memory layer, shared-context layer

Updated

Large language models are capable but uninformed. They know a great deal about the world and nothing about your company: last Tuesday’s decision, the client who asked for a change, the risk the team flagged and parked. An AI context layer is the part of the stack that supplies that knowledge.

How it works

A context layer does three jobs. It captures context from where work happens, typically meetings, threads, email and documents. It structures that material into things a model can use, such as decisions with owners and dates, open questions and risks, each linked to its source. And it serves the result to AI tools, most often through the Model Context Protocol, so Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot or Cursor can query it directly.

Governance runs through all three. A context layer that shows everyone everything is a data leak with a search box. Access needs to follow the same boundaries as the work itself; see permission-scoped context.

Enterprise search indexes what an organisation has already written and helps people find it. A context layer is concerned with what is currently true, including decisions that were spoken rather than written, and it is built to be read by machines as much as by people. The two overlap; the comparison with Glean sets out where.

Why it matters

Without a shared layer, each person briefs each assistant separately. The Coordination Tax Index 2026 (In Parallel, n=247 managers, Pollfish, June 2026) found 91% of managers load context into AI tools by hand, and managers who use AI daily report more coordination hours, not fewer: 20.3 a week against 9.1 for non-users. More AI without shared context adds work.

How In Parallel approaches it

In Parallel is built as a context layer, under the line “the shared-context layer for modern work”. It captures context automatically from meetings through Notes, keeps it current in Pages and serves it over MCP. The buying guide explains what to evaluate in any vendor, and Own your context covers what happens when you change tools.

FAQ

Common questions

Is an AI context layer the same as RAG?
No. Retrieval-augmented generation is a technique for pulling relevant text into a prompt. A context layer is the source being retrieved from: a maintained record with structure, provenance and access rules. Many context layers use retrieval, but retrieval over stale or unstructured documents does not make one.
Do I need a context layer if my AI assistant has memory?
Assistant memory belongs to one person and one vendor. A context layer is shared across the company and readable by every tool, so switching or adding an assistant does not mean starting again.
What should I look for when buying one?
Where the context comes from and whether it stays current, support for an open standard such as MCP, and whether access is scoped so each person and agent sees only what they should. The buying guide covers each in more detail.
