# What is a company brain?

Definition

A company brain is an AI system that answers the way the company itself would, drawing on its decisions, clients, commitments and reasons. It combines three parts: maintained company context, a foundation model, and the company's own agents and skills. The context is the part that changes daily and must be kept current.

Also called: enterprise brain, corporate brain

The phrase “company brain” has become shorthand for an AI that knows your business. It is a useful idea and a vague one. Breaking it into parts makes it clearer what has to be built, what can be rented and what has to be maintained.

## How it works

A company brain has three components.

- **Context** : what the company has decided, promised and learned, kept current and scoped to each reader. This is the part that is specific to you and the part that goes out of date.
- **Models** : the foundation models that do the reasoning. These are rented from AI vendors and will be replaced several times.
- **Agents and skills** : the instructions, workflows and tools that encode how your people do the work. These are written by the people who know the work.

The model is the most visible part and the least distinctive. Two companies using the same model get very different answers if their context differs.

## Why the context is the hard part

Context changes with every meeting. A decision is made on Monday and reversed on Thursday; a client renegotiates; a risk is closed. Unless something records those changes as they happen, the brain answers from last month. Raw meeting data does not solve this on its own: a transcript holds every word, sensitive or not, with no mark of what was decided, what was later overturned, or who could decide it. The value comes from refining it into decisions with owners, reasons and sources, sorted by sensitivity and scoped to each reader. See [context decay](https://www.in-parallel.com/glossary/context-decay) and [permission-scoped context](https://www.in-parallel.com/glossary/permission-scoped-context).

## Company brain vs organisational memory

[Organisational memory](https://www.in-parallel.com/glossary/organisational-memory) is the older management concept: the knowledge an organisation retains over time. A company brain is the AI system that puts that memory to work, answering questions and acting on it. The memory is the input; the brain is what reads it.

## How In Parallel approaches it

In Parallel supplies the context part, captured from meetings, kept current and served to whichever models and agents a company chooses over [MCP](https://www.in-parallel.com/mcp). The whitepaper [How to build a company brain](https://www.in-parallel.com/company-brain) sets out the full argument, including which part not to build yourself.

FAQ

## Common questions

**Should we build a company brain ourselves?**

Build the parts that are specific to you: your choice of AI platform and models, your agents, your skills. Think harder about building the context underneath. Capture, extraction, access control, retention and audit all need a team that stays, and a home build tends to deliver raw transcripts first and governance last.

**Is a company brain the same as a chatbot trained on our documents?**

No. Fine-tuning or indexing a pile of documents gives a model old material without knowing what was later reversed or who had the authority to decide. A company brain depends on context that is maintained: current, sourced and scoped to each reader.
